Tense

 Tense adalah hal yang sangat penting dan mendasar ketika mempelajari bahasa inggris. Tense pada umumnya digunakan untuk membentuk sebuah kalimat dalam bahasa inggris berdasarkan waktu, kejadian, atau peristiwa berlangsung. Tense memiliki kaitan yang sangat erat dengan waktu suatu kejadian. Suatu peristiwa atau kejadian bisa berlangsung di masa lampau, saat ini, dan di masa mendatang. 

Apa yang akan terjadi jika tidak memahami tense? Tentunya pembicaraan atau kalimat bahasa inggris yang kalian buat akan menjadi sulit dipahami dan dimengerti oleh orang lain. Maka dari itu aku akan mengajak kalian semua untuk memahami tense dan mengenal beberapa jenis tense. Yukk simak artikel di bawah ini!!

Types of Tenses

Basically tenses can be divided into three types namely Present, Past and Future. In each of these Tenses each has four types of Tenses again as explained below.

1. Present Tense

The basic principle of the Present Tense is to use the 1st form of the verb. This Present Tense is further divided into four different tenses consisting of:

a. Simple Present

This Tense function is used to express habits, facts, general truths and current circumstances.

  • Rumus : Subject + Verb 1 + Object/Adverb
  • Example: The class begins at seven. (Kelas dimulai jam 7).

b. Present Continuous

To describe an action that is happening right now but not at the right moment to speak

  • Example : He is working in Dubai. (Dia bekerja di Dubai). 

c. Present Perfect

This Tense function is used to express an event that started in the past and continues until now or has been completed at a certain point in time in the past and has something to do with the present.

  • Rumus : Subject + has/have + Verb 3 + Object/Adverb
  • Example : I have known him for years. (Saya telah mengenalnya beberapa tahun)

d. Present Perfect Continuous

The function of this Tense is to express activities that started in the past and are still ongoing.

  • Rumus : Subject + has/have + been + Verb ing + Object/Adverb
  • Example : I have been waiting for you for three hours. (Saya sudah menunggumu selama 3 jam).

2. Past Tense

The basic principle of the Past Tense is to use the 2nd form of the verb. Past Tense is further divided into 4 different tenses which consist of:

a. Simple Past

This Tense function is used for an event or habit that occurred in the past at a certain moment.

  • Rumus : Subject + Verb 2 + Object/Adverb
  • Example  They went to Lombok yesterday.

(Mereka pergi ke Lombok kemarin).

b. Past Continuous

This Tense function is used for events that are ongoing or happened in the past.

  • Rumus : S + was/were + V-ing
  • Example : When they arrived, she was cleaning the room. (Saat mereka tiba, dia sedang membersihkan ruangan).

c. Past Perfect

This Tense function is used in statements about an event in the past that occurred before the next event occurred. Both events took place in the past.

  • Rumus : Subject + had + V3
  • Example : They went home after they had submitted their assignment. (Mereka pulang ke rumah setelah menyerahkan tugas).

d. Past Perfect Continuous

This Tense function is used for events in the past that have been going on for a while and when another event occurs, the event has not been completed.

  • Rumus : S + had + been + V-ing
  • Example : She had been watering the plants for three hours when I came. (Ia telah menyirami bunga selama 3 jam ketika saya datang).

3. Future Tense

The basic principle of Future Tense is to use the first form of the verb but before the verb begins with will/would. This Future Tense is further divided into four different tenses consisting of:

a. Simple Future

This Tense function is used to express activities or events that will occur in the future.

  • Rumus : S + will + V1 + Object/Adverb
  • Example : I will go to Bali next year.

(Saya akan pergi ke Bali tahun depan).

b. Future Continuous

This Tense function is used to express activities that are being carried out in the future.

  • Rumus : S + will + be + V-ing
  • Example :I will be writing my report when you come. (Saya sedang menulis laporan saat kamu datang nanti).

c. Future Perfect

This Tense function is used to express events that have been completed in the future when other activities appear or before a certain time.

  • Rumus : S + will + have + V3
  • Example : I will have finished my paper by the time you come. (Saya sudah menyelesaikan makalahnya ketika kamu datang nanti).

d. Future Perfect Continuous

This Tense function is used to express an activity that will already occur in the future and when another activity occurs at a certain time, the first activity is still ongoing.

  • Rumus : S + will + have + been + V-ing
  • Example : My mother will have been sleeping for three hours by the time Showimah begins. (Ibuku telah tidur selama 3 jam ketika acara Showimah mulai). 

Dalam melakukan percakapan dan mempelajari bahasa hal utama adalah memahami bentuk tata bahasanya. Untuk membuat kalimat bahasa Inggris ada macam-macam tense yang perlu dipelajari untuk dapat membentuk kalimat yang sempurna sesuai gramatikal. Namun, hindari terpaku dengan rumusan dan jadi kurang berani untuk berlatih hanya karena takut salah. Seringlah berlatih baik berbicara atau menulis untuk mengasah penguasaan bahasa inggris terutama tata bahasanya.
